In chapters 1-4, we meet the main characters of our story. Carlie, Harvey, and Thomas J are all foster children who come to live with the Masons.
We also started exploring the reading strategy “Making Connections”. Good readers make connections while they are reading that help them better understand the text. There are three main types of connections: Text to Self, Text to Text, and Text to World.
Have you been able to make any connections to the three main characters so far? Explain the connection and how it helps you better understand the story.

Text To Self- When Carlie said that Harvey, Thomas J, and herself were like pinballs, it reminded me of a time when I kept going to different places all day, I felt like a pinball that day.
Text To Text- In a book called The Deep And Dark And Dangerous, one of the main characters was really mean and rude, like Carlie.
Text To World- In the world, there are really kids that need to go to foster homes for certain reasons, like Carlie, Thomas J, and Harvey.

Text To Self: When Carlie said that her, Thomas J, and Harvey were just pinballs, I felt I could relate that feeling cause I’ve could always remember a time when I suddenly had that feeling.
Text To Text: In a book called Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, a main character in the book, Harry, sort of has a connection to Harvey cause in the book I’ve already read,Voldemort murders Harry’s parents in which Harry doesn’t have any parents.
Text To World: kids around the world have been through what Harvey,Carlie and Thomas J, like adults not being able to take care of them, or otherwise parents just abusing children in a harmful way.In these cases, kids like Harvey,Thomas J and Carlie have gone to foster homes and felt the feelilng that you are a pinball, going from place to place.

Text To Text- I went over my cousins house house and they are loud and annyoing so I had to scream if I wanted to talk. The next day I lost my voice. It reminded me of Thomas J and how he had to scream because the twins he lived with were almost deaf.

text to text: i read a book once about a kid whose parents got split up and he was always going back and fourth between the two houses. kind of like the main characters in, “pinballs.”
text to self: this past summer i went to myrtle beach and it was like the day never ended!we went here and then we went there and then we went in the pool. we were so busy we were like a pinball machine.
text to world: in the 2008 summer olympics Michael Phelps won so many medals for swimming, i couldn’t keep count of which ones he won for each event. my mind was like a pinball machine.
