We have been exploring the reading strategy, “Asking Questions”. Good readers constantly ask questions of characters, situations, and even the author as they read. Your questions may not always be answered in the text, but you are helping yourself better understand the reading when you ask questions.
Based on where we are at in The Pinballs at this point, what questions do you have for or about Carlie, Harvey, and Thomas J? For example, you might wonder about Thomas J’s real mother and why she left him on the Benson twins’ doorstep. Please also share your thoughts on what you think the answer might be and why.

A question I might have for Thomas J is: Why doesn’t he just keep his hopes up and try to find or look for his mom like Harvey tried to find his? I mean sure he doesn’t know alot just about himself, but that or any other reason shouldn’t keep him from trying. I mean sometimes I try to do something but it doesn’t work. I may sometimes give up, but I learned that it’s not worth it to just give up. It’s worth it on trying no matter what. You have to know that you wouldn’t know what’s gonna happen unless you try. Now it doesn’t mean that I’m saying just try it once then you don’t have to anymore. I’m saying is that you have to believe and know you can do anything. Just because it doesn’t work the first time it doesn’t mean it won’t work for another try. It’s all about trying. Advise I give to Thomas J and of course Harvey, is that always belive and know you can do anything. Don’t let one bump on the road to success knock your hopes down. Trust me I’ve been there!

This is questions to either teacher, what is a matter of principle? and what kind of nurse did Carlie say she wanted to be? I looked through the book to find the answers for both questions but, I couldn’t find the answer and when the class gone over the questions, I was late so I didn’t get to correct or hear the answers. And in cause your’re wondering the first question I asked is in chapter 12. and the second question is on chapter 20. I was confused on both questions

Hi Betty-
When someone says that something is a “matter of principle”, they’re basically saying that it is the way things are supposed to be.
Carlie wants to be a “good luck nurse”, as she doesn’t want any patients to die while she’s taking care of them.
Hope this helps!

Thanks Mr. Dunn!!!! I forgot that she wanted to be a good luck nurse. And I was confused before on what Harvey’s dad said about having a hamster in the house was a matter of principle.
Thanks, it really helped!!!
