Now that we have finished The Pinballs, what ideas from the novel do you think are most important? Think about the author’s purpose for writing the story. What big ideas and themes is she trying to get across?

the themes that the author is trying to get across is that the kids in foster care are cared for and are wanted. They’re wanted by their foster parents.

The ideas that I think are important are when Carlie came up whth the idea about giving Harvey the puppy.

I also think another idea is when Mrs.Mason siad to Carlie that she would teach her to sew.

She might be addresing that some people can’t take control of their lives but some can. Also, she might be saying that people can change when meeting other people. Like Carlie.

I think what was important was the fact that Carlie discovered at the end that herself, Harvey and Thomas J were not pinballs, and weren’t pushed around as she thought they were. She thinks at the end that what happened to them now and the past had happened for a reason, and which was something they coundn’t control. Meaning they can control what they decide on, but they can’t help or control what happens to them. I’m sure everyone knows how it feels that way. When you think to yourself that “hey everyone wishes that they can go back in time to fix a problem or something, but you have no control over or on that. I know I think of that once in a while!
