For the month of January, the children of room 7 learned about Chinese New Year. They created Chinese lanterns and even used this theme in the door decorating contest.  As a culminating activity, we rang in Chinese New Year with red streamers and delicious orange slices!!  Mrs. Keyser spoke to the students about traditions and guided them in creating Chinese yo-yos decorated with calligraphy.  The students then enjoyed traditional Chinese candies, juice, oranges, and fried wontons.  This celebration was completed with each student receiving a red envelope, stuffed with chocolate coins!!  Luck and prosperity in the year to come!!!!
The children of Ms. McNally and Mrs. DePietro’s class completed a Social Studies project to learn how difficult life was for the settlers long ago.   Using materials available in nature, the settlers had to build their own shelter and make their own food and clothing.  To understand the effort this took, the students made their own butter using a mason jar, whipping cream, and a pinch of salt.  After all that hard work, they were eager to enjoy their butter on some store bought crackers!

Mrs. McAvoy’s second grade class is thankful for many things.  They completed a multistep project to share their ideas with you.  In the computer lab, the students used MaxPaint to draw a turkey.  Next, they typed statements of thankfulness.  Lastly, each student recorded their thoughts in the Photo Story project below.

Go Phillies!

Phildelphia’s motto is usually “Better luck next year!”  With the Phildelphia Phillies just games away from winning the World Series, the children of Mrs. DePietro and Ms. McNally’s class wanted to do something to change this philosophy.   After researching his/her assigned player, each student wrote a letter of encouragement and sent along a good luck charm with the hopes of inspiring a win.  Will the second graders of Reeds Road School play a part in a Philadelphia victory?  We’ll see!  Our new motto may just be: “Let’s do it again next year!”  GO PHILLIES!!
