• Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep!
• Make sure your child eats breakfast (either at home or school)!
• Make sure your child attends school every day of testing!
• Talk to your child about these test taking strategies:
  • Remaining calm
  • Reading the questions carefully
  • Checking their completed answers carefully

The faculty, staff, and administration have been working hard to prepare our students for this testing period.  To further prepare our students, the following will take place:

• ASK      Pep Rally! – Friday, May 3^rd at 2:00 p.m. in the cafetorium.

• A Free Breakfast will be provided for students during testing days (see back for menu). Breakfast  snacks will be provided to students during homeroom prior to the test.  Breakfast snacks choices consist of:
  • Cold  breakfast or
  • Hot  breakfast

• During testing breaks students will receive:
  • Star mints
  • 8 oz.  bottled water

• Every student will receive a study skills and test preparation workbook prior to the testing week.  Teachers will be reviewing the skills during the intervention period.

 The end of the year is quickly coming upon us.   It is time for board nominations and elections.  If you would like to run for a position or nominate someone, please come to the next meeting.

All people being nominated must attend the meetings and must be a paid FSA member.

Nominations will take place at the April meeting, which has been changed to Monday, April 8 at 8am in the Library.

Elections will be held at the May 7th meeting, also at 8am in the Library.

St. Baldrick’s Day 2013

On Friday morning 550 students crowded into the Roland Rogers Elementary School cafeteria and chanted “Shave your head” as teachers had their hair cut off for a St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser.

Since Feb. 19, the students and faculty raised more than $6,000 to donate to the foundation, a fundraising drive that culminated Friday morning on St. Baldrick’s Day.

For the fourth straight year, Roland Rogers staff members will be shaving their heads on March 15 in  an effort to raise money and awareness for childhood cancer research.  Last year alone, the St. Baldricks’s Foundation raised over $22 million worldwide!  If we reach our goal of $8,000, Mr. Silvestri will go bald!

We will be accepting donations in your child’s classroom beginning  February 19.   For every $5 a student donates, they will have a “Lucky Charm” placed in the lobby with their name on it.  A random drawing will be held on March 14 and prizes will be awarded to those winning students’ homerooms.

Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program created by NEA, National Education Association, that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 1st, the day before the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.

The Purpose of Read Across America

Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers. Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.

Author’s Visit-Shelly Gill

Children’s book author Shelley Gill spoke to all students in Grades K-3 during a presentation in our library on Wednesday, February 13th. Shelley Gill’s books on Alaska and the Pacific Northwest have sold more than a million copies world-wide. All of her books come from her own experiences and love of adventure.

Homeroom spelling bees will be held on Thursday, February 14th.  The top three students from each homeroom will compete in the school-wide spelling bee on March 1st.

The winner of the school-wide spelling bee will reprsent Roland Rogers at the regional bee on March 23, 2013 at GTMS.

Roland Rogers Elementary School is teaming up with the American Heart Association by participating in Jump Rope For Heart starting on February 4th. Through Jump Rope For Heart kids learn jump rope skills, how their heart works and raise money to help kids with special hearts. Have fun, learn how to stay healthy and make a difference in the lives of others!

Dear Parents/Guardians:

As you know from Public Information Messages, there is an increase in cases of pertussis (whooping cough) in the country.  We have had a case of suspected pertussis identified at Roland Rogers. Pertussis is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air by a cough or a sneeze. Pertussis begins with cold symptoms and a cough, which become much worse over 1-2 weeks. Symptoms usually include a long series of coughing fits followed by a whooping noise. However, older children, adults and very young infants may not develop the whoop. There is generally only a slight fever. People with pertussis may have a series of severe coughing fits followed immediately by vomiting, turning blue, or difficulty catching breath. The cough is often worse at night, and cough medicines usually do not help alleviate the cough.

If your child has been around someone with pertussis, s/he might become sick with the disease. This is especially true if your child is not up-to-date with his/her pertussis vaccine shots. Even if your child’s shots are up-to-date, s/he might still get pertussis.

If your child has been in contact with someone with pertussis, antibiotics prescribed by your doctor may prevent him/her from becoming ill. If your child is already sick, giving antibiotics early can help your child get well faster and lower the chances of spreading the disease to others.

Please consider the following New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services recommendations:

1. Infants under one year old, especially those under six months, are most likely to have severe symptoms if they develop pertussis. When possible, young infants should be kept away from people with a cough. Infants with any coughing illness should be seen promptly by their doctor.

2. Pertussis vaccine has until recently, been given only to children under 7 years old. However, a new adolescent and adult pertussis booster vaccine is now available for person’s ages 10 – 64 years. If you have children who have not been completely immunized against pertussis (particularly infants under one year) we recommend you now talk to your child’s doctor about the benefits of vaccination.

3. If your child comes down with cold symptoms that include a cough, talk to your child’s doctor immediately. Tell the doctor that pertussis has been identified at your child’s school.

4. It is generally recommended that those persons having close contact with a pertussis case receive antibiotics from their doctor to help prevent them from getting pertussis.

5. Do not send your child to school if s/he has any signs or symptoms of pertussis.

We continue to monitor the situation at school and if additional actions to control the spread of pertussis among pupils become necessary, we will again notify parents.

If you have general concerns or questions about pertussis, contact your local health department at 645.7700 Ext. 4236. If you have specific concerns or questions about your child’s health, contact your health care provider.

The students at Roland Rogers have re-elected President Barack Obama. Check out the Electoral Map and blog.

As of Election Day, President Barack Obama received 517 Electoral Votes and Governor Mitt Romney received 3 Electoral Votes.   All students participated in a LIVE mock election.  They had to sign their name to verify that they were registered and selected their candidate on an iPad as the voting machine.    ELL and GEM students manned the voting booths and tables.

As a teacher of English as a Second Language at Roland Rogers Elementary School in Galloway Township, Jose Diaz performs a vital service. And as a U.S. Navy veteran, Diaz is especially qualified to teach students another lesson: the importance of veterans.

On Nov. 2, Diaz gave the school’s first-graders a presentation on his years spent in the service.

Galloway Township is home to a large number of veterans, active military members, reservists and national guardsmen, which Diaz said makes his audience particularly receptive to the lesson.   More in the Press of Atlantic City- Click Here

Ebose was contestant #152.

Round One is a computer-based spelling test taken by all 278 spellers. Scores from the test will be combined with the results of Rounds Two and Three to determine the Semifinalists.

Spellers hear a recording pronouncing each word, and information about each word origin, part of speech, definition, sentence) will be displayed on-screen. The test has have no time limit, and spellers are given multiple opportunities to review their answers and word information prior to submitting their final answers.   Spellers spell 50 words, but only 25 spellings count toward each speller’s Preliminaries score.

Each speller receives 1 point for each score word spelled correctly during the Round One Test and 3 points for each word spelled correctly during Rounds Two and Three, for a maximum possible score of 31. Spellers scoring higher than at least 228 other spellers advance to the Semifinals.

About five minutes after the conclusion of Round Three, the names of the Semifinalists were announced and sadly Ebose did not make the cut but made us all proud.  We were so excited how he performed during the Rounds 2 and 3.  Many classrooms saw Round 2 as Ebose spelled the word ETHYLENE and many teachers stayed tuned for the Round 3 Broadcast after school or so that they would not miss Ebose spell his final word EXOPHTHALMIC.

Thanks to all those who came out and supported Galloway PAL.

The PAL Basketball Tournament was held at 6pm at GTMS Gym on Friday, May 4th.
Blue Team led by Mr. Diaz  defeated Red Team led by Mr. McCarthy  40-28.  Blue Team had 3 players in double digits:  Leading scorer for the Blue Team was Mr. Silvestri with 12 points followed by Mr. Dunn and Ms. Polisano with 10 points each.   Mr. Palumbo scored 6 points.  Leading scorer for the Red Team was Mr. Rodriguez with 16 points.   Mr. Albert was next with 6 points.    Blue Team was in the lead the whole game and held off Red Team through equally balanced ball distribution and key combined execution of  blocks and fouls on Red Team’s leading scorer.

It was a fun night from start to finish.  Mr. McCarthy and Mr. Diaz gave funny introductions for each of their teams.  In the end, it didn’t matter which team won Blue Team or Red Team; because once again Roland Rogers was victorious in showing their support for Galloway PAL.

Congratulations to Lynn Latham, the new Lite Rock teacher of the Month! Mrs. Latham, a first grade teacher from Roland Rogers Elementary School in Galloway was my guest today on the Lite Rock Morning Show. You can hear… our conversation on the attached link below.

Her nominating student was Brandon Hesham, who personally wrote an adorable nominating e-mail. Brandon could be the winner of a $2000 scholarship at the end of the school year for putting in his nomination.

This is one of Rotary’s most important and most successful community service projects because of its direct contact with so many young girls and boys in their classroom settings.

The goal of the Dictionary Project is to improve the reading ability and comprehension of all children, everywhere. It is their goal to encourage children to use dictionaries so that they will be able to use the English language effectively.  A student cannot do his or her best work without a dictionary.  By providing this tool, Rotarians assist teachers in making all students active readers, good writers and creative thinkers.  Students can use the dictionaries throughout their school careers.  Over the past several years, the club has donated over 3000 dictionaries to the students in the area.

Mr. Diaz gave his annual Veteran’s Day presentation to all the Kindergarten, 1st and 4th Grade students on November 9th, 2011.  He talked about some of the different veteran organizations he belongs to.  He shared stories of his time in the Navy from the time he entered the Navy and went to Boot Camp all the way to his last day in the Navy after serving onboard the U.S.S. Mississippi CGN-40, a nuclear guided missisle cruiser.  He also shared photos showing how he got interested in becoming a teacher when serving in the Navy.  In every place, Mr. Diaz was stationed, he either tutored students, read to kids at a public library or did his student teaching.

Roland Rogers invites you into our classrooms to be a part of our American Education Week Activities.  Join Us As We Celebrate on November 18^th.  Our teachers have prepared a variety of educational activities and presentations that will showcase our students’ achievements across the curriculum!

Visits by parents and guardians welcome during the school day.

Roland Rogers Elementary School held a Walk-a-thon on Friday, October 21, 2011 and raised $1,926 for the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

Every year, on the last Sunday in September, people from around the world gather for this memorial run to pay tribute to the memory of the heroic life and death of Firefighter Stephen Siller, his 342 FDNY brothers, first responders and all victims lost on 9/11.

This fundraiser will

•Help build HOMES for severely injured Servicemen and women

•Help Burn Centers across America heal our firefighters and burn victims

•Help bring hope to grieving Children.

The Foundation has established LET US DO GOOD PROGRAMS as a way to make a lasting and positive difference in the lives of others.  These programs, In the Line of Duty and In the Name of Love, bring hope to grieving children, and healing to firefighters and families of our military, who sacrifice life and limb in the line of duty by supporting the Weill-Cornell Burn Center and Burn Centers across America, and restores shattered lives by building homes for surviving quadriplegic servicemen returning from combat.

All Kindergarten through sixth grade students and staff were involved.  The Kindergarten will walked 1 mile.  The first and second grade students will walked
2 miles.  The third and fourth grades walked 3.5 miles.   Grades 5 & 6 walked 5 miles.

 Terry Dougherty named Great American Teach Off finalist needs community support to win $10,000 classroom grant

Hundreds of teachers nationwide have been nominated but only ten have been chosen finalists in the Great American Teach Off. The online community GOOD, and University of Phoenix have teamed up to host the contest, which will reward $10,000 to one talented teacher.

Terry Dougherty of Roland Rogers Elementary School is one of ten finalists vying for the grant. Starting Monday, October 3rd, people can go to www.good.is/gato  to vote for their favorite teacher. People can vote once a day. Each week, the lowest two vote-getters will be eliminated from the competition until one teacher is left. He or she will be declared the winner and receive a $10,000 classroom grant.

Three years ago she began the program Free Military Child Tutoring-They are Heroes Too! As a military spouse for thirty years and as a mother, she understands the separation and transition issues that these resilient children face and is making a difference by offering free tutoring services. Her success and positive impact at Roland Rogers Elementary School and in the community brings attention to the unique needs and sacrifices that the children of our military personnel endure for our country.

The Bully Proofing Program consists of six lessons that will be taught during September for Grades 1-8 and September and October for Kindergarten. There will also be follow-up lessons on the early dismissal days.

In the beginning of the year, every student signs a pledge to be bully free. That pledge is posted on the wall for the duration of the school year.

 Traffic in and around school zones can create significant hazards for children and teens, as well as crossing guards, school officials, and volunteers. Parents often unknowingly create traffic hazards as they drop off or pick up their children from school. 

To ensure everyone’s safety, be sure to do the following: 

• Please review and always follow your school’s student drop off plan.
•  Drop your child off on the school side of the street, next to the curb. 
• Follow instructions provided by school crossing guards.
•  Slow down and comply with the posted speed limit not only in school zones, but where children are walking or biking along the road.
•  Resist the urge to “drop off and dash.” Pull out slowly and look not only ahead, but alongside and behind your vehicle for pedestrians, bicyclists, cars, and buses. 
• Eliminate all distractions‐‐particularly cell phones and other electronic devices that reduce your ability to react quickly in driving situations involving young children and their spontaneous actions. 
• Teach your child to look all ways before crossing and to cross only in crosswalks or at corners.  
• Make sure that everyone in your vehicle is properly restrained in the appropriate child safety seat or booster seat or seat belt. New Jersey law requires all children under 8 years of age or who weigh less than 80 pounds to ride in a properly installed car or booster seat. All children between 8 and 18 years of age and all adults must wear a seat belt.

Students in grades 1-3 that have displayed a positive attitude, shown improvement, excelled in a particular area, or stand out for any reason can be nominated as a STARR!  The STARR of the month will receive a certificate, a special prize, and have their pictures displayed!  In addition, the STARR student gets to eat lunch with the assistant principal!!!

April is the Month of the Military Child so each year Ms. Dougherty has a luncheon for them in thrid grade.   She hopes to expand for all children next year.

Month of the Military Child gives the nation the opportunity to recognize the character, strength and sacrifices of America’s military children as well as the role they play in the armed forces community. Today, there are 1.7 million American children and youth under 18-years-old with a parent serving in the military and approximately 900,000 children and youth with one or both parents deployed multiple times

Roland Rogers Pennies for Patients program will run for a FOUR week period beginning March 1st.  The homeroom collecting the most change will receive a pizza party and the second place homeroom an ice cream party. There are also drawings for students who raise over $50 to win great prizes!!  There are over 25,000 schools nationwide participating in this event and we here at Roland Rogers are proud to be one of them.

Here’s how you can help:

During the program’s run (March 1st-25th), we are asking you and your child to donate pennies, dimes, nickels, quarters (spare change) or any amount possible to assist your child’s class in their fundraising efforts.  Parents may also send checks made payable to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

2011 Roland Rogers Spelling Bee

Who: 4th, 5th, and 6th Grade Students
When:  Friday, February 25th at 9:30 am

 Homeroom spelling bees will be held during the week of February 7th.  The top three students from each homeroom will compete in the school-wide spelling bee on February 25th.

 The winner of the school-wide spelling bee will represent Roland Rogers at the regional bee on March 12, 2011 at Stockton College.

2010 Roland Rogers Spelling Bee

Ebose Eigbe, fourth grade, represented Roland Rogers at the Tri-County Spelling Bee.  Fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classrooms held bees to determine their three top spellers.  They then advanced to the school bee in which the thirty-nine best spellers competed.  Ebose won the school bee spelling the word “photosynthesis”.

Ebose advanced all the way to the seventh round of the Tri-County Spelling Bee, easily spelling words like “latitudinarian” and “gazpacho”.  We would like to congratulate Ebose on his accomplishments!  Ebose faced forty-five other spelling champions from schools in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties which competed in the Tri-County Spelling Bee at The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in Galloway Township.   

The annual event is open to students through grade eight in all schools and homeschooled students in the three counties. Schools host their own local bees to choose a winner to participate in the larger bee. The winner of the bee, which is sponsored by The Press of Atlantic City, will go on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee on May 31 through June 5 in Washington D.C. This year, ABC will televise the finals of the competition June 4.

It is imperative that we have the correct primary phone number for each child (although this number may be your home, cell, or even work number – whichever you prefer).

In the case of inclement weather that causes schools to close, YOU WILL RECEIVE A PHONE CALL FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT ON EITHER THE NIGHT BEFORE OR THE MORNING THAT SCHOOL IS TO BE CLOSED. The district uses a communications tool called School Messenger that allows us to record one message and send it to every parent and staff members’ home on the day of the closing.

In addition to receiving a phone call, closing information is posted on the district homepage, it is tweeted, and if you call the main phone number (609-748-1250), the main recording will announce the closing as well. 

One-Hour Delayed Opening

Please be advised that in the event of inclement weather the school district may use a one-hour delay. This means that:

- If a student is transported by bus, the student should report
  to the bus stop one hour later than the usual time.
- If a student is driven to school, walks, or rides a bike to
  school, the student should arrive one hour later than the
  usual time.
- Child Care would also be delayed by the same hour.
- The school day would end at the normal time.

You are encouraged to listen fully to any automated message from the school district.

Monday was a very special day for all Americans. While Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday is January 15, the celebration of Dr. King’s birthday and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the third Monday of January. To honor Dr. King’s legacy, why not listen to his most brilliant, enduring work, the famous “I Have A Dream” speech given on August 28, 1963.

Roland’s School Culture

Roland Rogers Faculty, Staff and Administration adopted a “Team Concept” for collaboration, communications and teacher leadership. With the development of a true School Level Planning Team, we have been able to exercise effective collaborative planning, engage in school based teacher-led professional development, disseminate information throughout the school appropriately and communicate the academic needs of our students with parents.

Establishing a culture of inclusiveness where all stakeholders have a voice and input into various aspects of planning and programming has been one of the success stories of this school.

Parent involvement plays a vital role in the success of our school. The School Level Planning Team established a parent outreach program to get parents more involved in their child’s academics and to provide parents with information regarding curriculum, school programs and parent volunteer programs

Items were placed on the tables in the front of the school from November 1^st until November 18th. On behalf of the Roland Rogers Student Council, we thank you for your generosity!

 As the holiday season approached, the staff and students at Roland Rogers were preparing to help families in need of assistance. The Student Council requested everyone’s  help in getting the following items needed broken down by grade level:

Our local Fire Department paid a visit to Roland Rogers.   Firefighters gave demonstrations and showed off their trucks at our bus loop.  Firefighters showed off the different facets of their fire trucks and answered students’ questions.  Some students even got to go inside a one of the fire trucks.

Humane Society food drive more than a pet project for Roland Rogers students

GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP – A pickup truck full of merchandise will be delivered to the Humane Society of Atlantic County in early 2010 thanks to the behavior disability classes at Roland Rogers Elementary School.

“We did it as a life skill lesson for community service,” said Jennifer Jourdan who teaches grades four and five. “It’s the class’s way of giving back to the community.”

This project will help the Humane Society care for animals in need while providing a positive focus for the students, she said.

The students in all elementary grades participated in the month-long project, Jourdan said. Participating teachers were Kristen Costantino, Carrie Giaconia, Joe Palumbo and Katie Kuras.

Students worked hard collecting, organizing and speaking on behalf of the Humane Society. The collection ran from Nov. 16 to Dec. 21.

Items collected included newspapers, paper towels, dish soap, canned cat and dog food, blankets and towels, bleach, dog biscuits, dog and cat toys and copy paper.

Kevin Murray, 10, son of Sharnica and Kevin Murray, said he understands pet problems.

“My dog’s name is Ashley and she ran away,” Murray said Tuesday, Dec. 22. “Dogs are cute. Cats are cute, too.”

His role was getting people to donate items for the Humane Society shelter.

Nicholas Berenato, 6, son of Lauren and Mike Berenato, said he has a lot of pets at home.

“I have a turtle, a lizard, a dog, another dog, a cat and a snake,” Berenato said. “The Humane Society helps dogs that don’t have homes.”

Berenato said he was unsure how people learned about their drive for supplies, but he was glad they did.

“People just found out,” he said.

Nicholas Rosario, 10, son of Nicole and Rey Rosario, said he knew how people found out.

“We made (drop-off) boxes and drew pictures of the pets on them,” Rosario said. “We sent home letters and we got to talk on the morning announcements about our collection.”

Rosario said he has a pet hermit crab.

“His name is Mr. Crabs and he has changed shells since we got him,” he said.

Wilfredo DeHoyos Jr., 10, son of Carla DeHoyos and Wilfredo DeHoyos Sr., said he has three pets.

“One is Fay Fay, a rabbit,” DeHoyos said. “Mitchie, he’s an old cat; I think we had a mouse or something so we got him. Next Meania; she’s a cat.”

DeHoyos said he made a speech that was carried through the school on morning announcements.

“I did a speech on the microphone – I wrote it on a computer,” he said. “They need cleaning supplies to clean up the dirty parts at the Humane Society. Mrs. Jourdan is going to pack all this into her truck and deliver it.”

Isaac Erickson, 8, son of Amber and Jeremy Erickson, said he has four dogs at home.

“One is a teacup and one is a toy Chihuahua,” Erickson said. “Then there’s Taz – I don’t know what he is. And Moonlight is a wolf.”

His first thought on wolves apparently involved a danger to young children cited in fairy tales.

“She doesn’t eat me,” he said. But then to emphasize the wolf’s credentials, he added, “But she can howl.”

Erickson’s job was painting the dogs and cats on the boxes and then placing the boxes in classrooms.

“The newspapers are used to line cages,” he said. “Food is for the animals to eat. And they clean dogs using the dishwashing soap.”

Jourdan said the project had the hoped-for effect on the youngsters.

“We sorted all the items,” she said. “When they saw how many we collected they were happy. They felt good about themselves by doing good for others.”

The students in Mrs. Costantino’s and Mrs. Jourdan’s class will be working hard to ensure this project is a huge success. They will be collecting, organizing, and speaking on behalf of the ACHS. We are asking for your help in bringing in donations to help the animals that are in need. We will be collecting items from November 16, to December 21, 2009.

 The items on the Humane Society’s wish list include:
