On Thursday April 8th Smithville Elementary School held a family math night. Parents were invited to participate in a fun night of grade level math games with their children. All students and parents who participated in our family math night had a wonderful time! Families were also provided with math games to take home and play. Thanks to everyone who came out to make this night a great event!

Wall of Fame

Everyone wants to be on the wall of fame! Our new school wide recognition program recognizes students for their achievements in the classroom. Each classroom door is bordered by a new “Wall of Fame” bulletin board. Teachers are displaying outstanding student work to highlight the student’s success. Teachers and students from around the school are taking an extra moment to congratulate those students. Wall of Fame bulletin boards will be changing frequently, so be sure to check them out each time you visit our school!

Cultural Day 2010

The third grade students have been learning about culture and diversity in Social Studies class this year.  As a final project they had a Cultural Day Celebration.  Each student had a chance to inform their peers of their heritage and share a cultural recipe.  Many of the students even brought in their cultural dish for everyone to share. Thank you for all of the delicious dishes!

For Sale…

Fourth grade GEM students worked in real estate teams to research and create a model of the perfect vacation home for billionaire “Ronald Stump’ and his family. After completing a quick investigation of ten different historical buildings, each team chose one to research.  The research included finding information on the building, things to do in the city or town where it is located and the best travel route to get there from New York City.  The three buildings chosen were Osaka Castle in Osaka, Japan, Lucy the Elephant in Margate, New Jersey and the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.

Once the research was completed and a backboard made to display the information, it was up to the architect to gather the materials needed to build the structure and guide the team through the process.  The groups used various materials such as cereal boxes, paper cups and wire to make the base of the structure.  The structures were then covered with gauze and painted.

The students are waiting anxiously to see which building will become the vacation home for Mr. Stump.

Cultural Foods Day

Cultural Foods Day was such a success in third grade! We had so much fun learning about the different cultures of our classroom and enjoying the foods from those cultures! Thanks so much to all the students and parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles who helped make this day possible!

Second grade students recently celebrated Chinese New Year.  They kicked off the New Year by reading, Yeh Shen, the Chinese version of Cinderella.  Throughout the week, the students painted their names in Chinese with watercolors, constructed a Chinese Zodiac, and learned all about Chinese dragons.  They concluded the Chinese New Year with a Chinese food festival, where they tasted white rice, vegetable fried rice, egg rolls, crispy noodles, and a fortune cookie.  It was a fun and educational week for all!

First and Second graders have been using technology in the computer lab to enhance their understanding of classroom math topics.  First graders used Kidspiration to sort coins into the appropriate money bags.  As a follow up, students counted how much money was in each bag. Although quarters were challenging…most students were able to figure out they had more than 1 dollar in the quarter bag.

Second graders have been working with shapes!  After sorting shapes into different categories, they used shapes to create animals.  They created animals by rotating shapes, changing colors and then used a key to find the value of the animal.  It was interesting to see the creativeness of the students.  Finally, students used pattern blocks to extend and create patterns.

The students in Mrs. Elia and Mrs. Glascock’s fifth grade class have been practicing their creative writing skills through “snapshots.” The main objective is to use sensory details and figurative language to bring to life a brief moment in time.  In order to present their writing in an interesting way, the students created PhotoStory projects that capture the essence of their snapshots.  Please take a moment to check a fe out:  Carnival Bullies by Jada, Good Christmas by Jeshua and The Best Christmas by Carson

Thanks so much to all the parents who came to visit our room for American Education Week.  We sure had fun performing our Reader’s Theater plays based on the books by Kevin Henkes for our guests!  Can you identify any of these adorable little mice who were kind enough to say “cheese” for a quick picture?
