Sixth Grade Pilot Program

During the 2011-2012 school year we are piloting two gender-based classrooms at the sixth grade level in both language arts and math. For those students who were randomly selected, language arts and math instruction will be provided in gender-based classrooms while science, social studies, and special area instruction will take place in a mixed-gender setting for those students. In accordance with Title IX regulations, participation in the program is voluntary. A letter was sent home today, Friday, September 9th, which provides information about the pilot program. The letter also contains a survey related to the program. We asking all sixth grade parent(s) / guardian(s) to fill out the survey and return the survey to school with your child on Monday, September 12th.

Kindergarten Students Work First – Eat Second

Kindergarten students reviewed how to form the letter “s”, the sound it makes, chorally recited S-snake-/s/, drew the letter in the air and created a huge “S” with their bodies in the cafeteria. The students enjoyed eating sand as a final activity….of course the sand was made of pudding and broken cookies….Mmmmmmm!

Enjoying “Pi”

Mr. Bisignaro’s sixth grade math students enjoyed learning about Pi. In working with Pi the students took the first 100 digits and determined how many times each digit, 0-9, was listed. After tallying the results students wrote fractions, decimals and percents. The most enjoyable activity was eating Pi. Students were able to select two circular food items. After calculating the circumference and area of the food the students were able to enjoy their treat.

Read Across America Celebration

Mrs. Smith’s sixth grade class wrote letters to their kindergarten reading buddies introducing themselves. On March 2nd sixth grade students visited their buddies and read to them. The kindergarten students had a wonderful time working with their buddies throughout this Read Across America project.

Black History Month Activities

Each student from Mrs. Durazzi’s social studies class researched a famous Black American and presented the information to his/her class. Two American flag collages were constructed using pictures of all the famous Black Americans presented.

Greek and Latin Word Study Brings in the Navy

Mr. Bisignaro’s sixth grade students were studying “naut, naus, and nav” Greek and Latin words and “Navy” was one of the words discussed. A parent of one of his students, Retired Navy Captain Christopher Moschella visited the class and shared his experiences in the Navy.
