The beginning of the year for 5th and 6th grade español classes is always spent reviewing what they learned last year.  One thing they always review is conversation phrases (Good morning. How are you? What’s your name? Nice to meet you…all in español, of course!).  This year, 5th and 6th graders at and Smithville chose famous Hispanics to pretend to be and create a conversation with a partner between their two famous Hispanics.  Some of the famous Hispanics included Alex Rodriguez, George Lopez, Jennifer Lopez, Dora and Handy Manny.  They asked each other questions like: How old are you? and When is your birthday? then they answered with the famous Hispanic’s actual birthday, age, etc.  Next, they recorded their conversations onto Ipods and we all listened to them as a class.  It was a different way to present the conversations.  Students didn’t have to go up to the front of the room and talk in front of their class.  They could just sit back, relax and listen to themselves speak in español!

As third grade students learned about Veteran’s Day they had the opportunity to visit with Major Fornili who came to Smithville School via a video call using Skype.  Major Fornili shared with the children his role in Iraq, the type of climate he has experienced, as well as living conditions.  Through the use of computer technology students saw pictures of the airplanes, helicopters and heavy equipment used where he is stationed.  During this 40 minute period students also had their questions answered by the Major. Major Fornili has served his country for 21 years and is currently completing his second tour in Iraq.  He is the br0ther-in-law of third grade teacher, Mrs. Kell.

Mrs. Elia and Mrs. Glascock’s fifth grade class began the school year reading Frindle by Andrew Clements.  Through this whole-class novel study, the students identified story elements and applied reading comprehension strategies.  In celebration of the novel, the class put on a Frindle play that one student wrote and directed.  Each student actively participated and gave the book Frindle two big thumbs up!
